It’s official: Trelleborg Sealing Solutions set a new Guinness World Records® title for the largest O-Ring. It was manufactured at our facility in Tewkesbury, England, using our unique FlexiMold™ process. The successful record attempt was the focus for a community-based project with Tewkesbury School.
On 12 July 2019, the giant O-Ring – 364 meters in circumference – was laid around the Medieval Tewkesbury Abbey. The Borough Mayor of Tewkesbury, an adjudicator from the Guinness World Records, employees from the Trelleborg facility, the pupils that had been involved in the project, their teachers and parents, and other representatives from the local community joined the ceremony.
To set a world record for the largest O-Ring ever produced, code named “Project Onion Ring” Trelleborg Sealing Solutions in Tewkesbury, teamed up with 20 pupils from Tewkesbury School who have chosen engineering for their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). Over the last months, the students were coached in various manufacturing disciplines and were involved in the design, costing and production planning of the O-Ring.
This project highlights the support of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 4 – Quality Education. The excitement about the Guinness World Records® title for the largest O-Ring will hopefully inspire future generations to transform crazy ideas or dreams into successful projects.
